1/8
The walk through the Areuse Gorge in the canton of Neuchâtel between the towns of Noiraigue and Boudry is a scenic sight. The first highlight of this tour is the old stone bridge «Saut du Brot», used to cross the thundering waters of Areuse.

Aare – Switzerland’s longest river

The source of Aare is in the Grimsel region and is on the way from a small mountain river to a large stream. There are various long walks on a total of 288 kilometers of track. A visit to the Aare Gorge, close to its source in Meiringen BE, will give you an idea of the power of the water. Or you can enjoy the tranquility on the riverside road from Thun BE to Bern. In the city of Bern, attractions such as the Matten district, the Marzili outdoor pool or the Dählholzli animal park can be explored with nice walks along the river Aare. The area known as the moat castle in Brugg AG is particularly impressive. This is where the Reuss and Limmat rivers meet the Aare and form a floodplain conservation park that can be explored within a ten-kilometer hike.

Lütschine – in the beautiful Lauterbrunnen Valley

The correct name of this wild river in the Bernese Oberland is United Lütschine. For it is the waters of the White and Black Lütschine that converge here. Black Lütschine brings water from Grindelwald BE to the valley, while Weisse Lütschine comes from the Lauterbrunnen Valley. This majestic glacial valley is also known as “the valley of 72 waterfalls”. Here everywhere bodies of water fall over vertical walls. The walk from Zweilütschinen BE along the right bank of the river to Lauterbrunnen BE is particularly beautiful. In Steinhalten, a short climb towards Wengen is helpful to get an overview of the majestic end of the valley and the village of Lauterbrunnen. It then slowly makes its way back to the riverbank. If you want to stay on the road a little longer, it is useful to continue walking towards Stechelberg.

Vorderrhein – In Switzerland’s Grand Canyon

The Rhine Pass offers one of the most spectacular river views in Switzerland. We owe the Swiss Grand Canyon to the landslide that happened 10,000 years ago and to the constant power of the Rhine River that gave rise to the rocks here over the years. The Rhine Gorge reveals all its magic, especially in the morning and evening light. A beautiful hike starts from Illanz GR via Versam towards Reichenau-Tamins GR and runs along the Vorderrhein through floodplain landscapes of national importance. Rare orchids and waterfowl can be spotted along the way. It’s uphill at Versam, but well worth the effort because the Islabord viewing platform offers a great view towards the Rhine Pass. By the way, there are a total of five platforms along the Bosphorus, which can be reached with less sweaty walks.

Sihl – in the tale of Sihlwald

The source of Sihl is in the canton of Schwyz, east of Hoch-Ybrig, and from there it moves slowly down the valley until it flows into the Limmat in the middle of the city of Zurich. A trip to Sihltal near Sihlbrugg ZG and from there to Schönenberg ZH is particularly worthwhile. The entire walk takes about three hours. Many small swimming spots on the way invite you to linger. If you want to take a break along the way, you can do so, for example, at the farm restaurant “Bäsebeiz a dä Sihl”, which you can reach in about an hour. From here on, the area gets wilder and the forest looks like it’s straight out of a fairy tale. Throughout Sihl it is mesmerizingly beautiful and quiet, not only in the warmer months but also in the winter. Shortly before Schönenberg, you reach the stream called Sihlsprung, where Sihl is narrowed and therefore accelerated by high rock surfaces.

Areuse – through deep passages

The hike through the Areuse Gorge in the canton of Neuchâtel is less of a hike, while the route between Noiraigue and Boudry is quite adventurous. But you will be rewarded with a unique nature view. In total, eleven kilometers must be traveled from Noiraigue. First you follow the railway line for a while, until the Areuse valley gradually narrows and you find yourself in the impressive Jurassic landscape. The first highlight of this tour is the old stone bridge «Saut du Brot», used to cross the thundering waters of Areuse. It’s a great photographic subject, especially in autumn, when the colorless leaves add a certain touch to the landscape. If you don’t want to go as far as Boudry, you can take the train to Neuchâtel from the next town, “Le Champ-du-Moulin-Dessous”.

Ibach – along the cantonal border

Over thousands of years, Ibach’s abrasive work has created the fabled karst landscape of the Chaltbrunnen valley, not far from the city of Basel. Some of the deep caves with bold names such as Heidenküche or Chessiloch can also be visited by non-professionals. Chessiloch is the first highlight on the way from Grellingen BL to Meltingen SO. The well-known coat of arms is located where Stone Age people once took shelter. Soldiers serving during the First World War painted the coats of arms of their cantons here. From here it runs along the Ibach towards the valley. Caves along the way remind of the archaeological importance of this region, and traces of Neanderthals are also found here. When you finally reach the upper end of the Chaltbrunnen valley, the view widens again and you reach the village of Meltingen.

Kander – in the wild high mountains

The Kander is an imposing mountain river in the Bernese Oberland and is particularly impressive because of its source in the Kandern part and the first part of the Gasterntal. The high mountain valley is like something from another time. From here, avid hikers can reach Valais via the Lötschenpass. Or you can enjoy the peace and quiet of the valley surrounding the hamlet of Selden. Here, Kander is given ample space to keep his original course. The river landscape is correspondingly beautiful and original. If you wish, you can climb a little higher in the direction of Kanderfirn, passing the Heimritz Alpine Inn. Or, from Selden, which you can reach by pre-booked minibus, you can take the turn over the Chluse Gorge to Kandersteg BE and cross the impressive Gastereholz alluvial plain.
