Today the “coolest” cult film of the nineties is released for the home cinema – the Ultimate Collector’s Edition in particular is an absolute feast for the eyes!

Can’t get more nineties!!! Those pants alone – and then a guest appearance by Naomi Campbell in the first scene…

Rapper Vanilla Ice was one of music’s biggest stars in the early ’90s, but when he wanted to capitalize on it on the big screen, he crash-landed: Pretty much everything about 1991’s Cool As Ice feels like the movie wouldn’t . are directed by music video specialist and later “Inspector Gadget” director David Kellogg, but by aliens with a penchant for high-contrast neon colors!

The perfect ingredients for a huge theatrical flop – and later rediscovery as a cult film!

The fan label Turbine Medien today brings “Cool As Ice” back to the home theater – as Ultimate Edition Mediabook with three different covers (each limited to 500 pieces):

But the real eye-catcher is of course also Ultimate Collector’s Edition limited to 500 pieces in 12-inch vinyl format:

Today the “coolest” cult film of the nineties is released for the home cinema – the Ultimate Collector’s Edition in particular is an absolute feast for the eyes!

Four rappers in suburban hell

The story of “Cool As Ice” makes no sense – but it does deliver the unforgettable, timeless catchphrase: “Drop that zero and get to the hero!”

Vanilla Ice plays the rapper Johnny, who seemingly runs aimlessly around the area on neon-painted motorcycles with three co-workers (while scaring the horses of young women and then beating the discarded girl as if nothing happened). A malfunction forces the quartet to an unplanned stop: they end up with an old couple of mechanics who live in a quirky house that actually looks like someone just used Vanilla Ice’s baggy pants with their striking pattern as a blueprint – somewhere between the misunderstood modern eclectic style and the Sesame Street set!

Across the street is white-picket-fence-suburban-hell – and that’s where Kathy (Kristin Minter) lives, the girl on the horse who’s such a nerd her good grades even get her on TV. The only problem is: Kathy’s parents have been on a witness protection program for 20 years – and Papa Gordon’s (Michael Gross) TV appearance suddenly leads to some bad men from his past appearing on the mat…

No Oscar, but at least a Golden Raspberry

“Cool As Ice” was nominated for seven Golden Raspberries in 1992 – but had to admit defeat in most categories to Bruce Willis and his mega-flop “Hudson Hawk”. But at least it was enough for the Worst New Star award. It’s precisely the ultra-cool fuck-everything mentality in Vanilla Ice’s game that makes the film so iconic – along with the equipment, the costumes and the sometimes bizarrely over-the-top staging (there’s a time-lapse sequence with the Kathy’s family, which appears to be the opening credits of “The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air” on crack).

This is the stuff cult movies are made of!

Although we also have to admit: when the conspiracy about the extortion of Kathy’s parents increasingly comes to the fore in the second half, Despite the varied Vanilla Ice songs (which you can also select directly from the menu), there are also a few real looooongs in the film…
