Greta Gerwig’s “Barbie” starring Margot Robbie in the title role is currently raging like a tsunami through cinemas around the world – breaking rows of box office records in the process. For example, “Barbie” had the most successful start to a film by a female director. And now the bright pink satire has also pushed a rather gloomy fellow off his throne, who of all people Christopher Nolan was staged i.e. the director whose atomic bomb epic “Oppenheimer” was in a head-to-head race with “Barbie” when it was released in theaters and lost – albeit at a very high level.
“Barbie” has been writing great numbers every day since its launch on July 20, 2023 – as we learned in the movie, every day is the best day for Barbie. This week, for example, was the best Monday ever: With $26.1 million at the US box office, “Barbie” had the best Monday in the history of the Warner Bros. studio. And this record was previously held by a certain Dark Knight at the Warner house…
“Barbie” Now Solves Christopher Nolan’s Masterpiece”The dark knightas Warner’s Best Monday Movie. 15 years ago, it brought in $24.5 million on one Monday at the beginning of the week. And if you look at the best edits of all time in all studios? “Barbie” is now enthroned in an impressive 13th place.
“The Dark Knight” Abandoned on Monday – Now What?
“Barbie” grossed a whopping $162 million at the home box office. Adding up Monday’s numbers and Tuesday’s forecasts, it should now total 200 million. “Oppenheimer” is expected to exceed 100 million in North America through Tuesday. International figures for Monday and Tuesday are still pending, but both films should continue to shine outside of North America. In its opening weekend, “Barbie” grossed approximately $344 million worldwide, and “Oppenheimer” grossed $176 million.
So the “Barbenheimer” hype is real: Together, “Barbie” and “Oppenheimer” form an unbeatable duo that has given cinemas one of the best box office weekends of all time – and there is no end to this triumphant march.
