Far from shopping tourism: Constance is more than a shopping center

The Obermarkt, in the middle of Konstanz’s old town, served as the city’s place of justice in the Middle Ages – this is also where the yoke stood. Today the main focus is banquet: the impressively painted Hotel Barbarossa serves Baden specialties on the terrace.

Our visit to Lake Constance begins with an unexpected invitation. Andreas Fritz (64) says with a laugh, “You can’t pass by our wine tavern without having a glass of water” and invites us to “Niederburg”, one of the most traditional wine taverns in the city, “Franz Fritz”.

The Fritz family has been in the wine business for over 380 years: as coopers, viticulturalists and vintners – apparently yesterday in the original house in Niederburg, the region between Münster and the Rhine, where the Middle Ages still lived. The houses are being plastered, the streets are winding and narrow – too narrow for delivery traffic, so no shopping scene can take hold here. Instead, violinists, bookbinders, and wine bars moved to the old walls. Best of all: you won’t find tourists shopping here.

Switzerland’s shopping spree is both a blessing and a curse for the city of 80,000. Swiss shoppers bring with them money that could be spent on major infrastructure projects, but on busy days they completely cram Konstanz and when looking for bargains they miss the most important thing: Konstanz is the most beautiful city on the shore of Lake Constance and a jewel for tourists.

different city

“Constance was last destroyed by war in the 10th century,” explains city guide Daniel Gross, 57, who showed us his home beyond the Lago mall and DM pharmacy. We explore a city full of charm and high quality of life, sit in cozy cafes, take a boat tour of the Bay of Constance, see modern art and the birthplace of Guillaume Henri Dufour (1787-1875), who went down in Swiss history as a general, politician and castle builder. And our path leads again and again to past monasteries, churches and chapels (Constanz is especially interesting for those interested in history and culture).

For more than 1300 years, much of southern Germany and Switzerland was subordinate to the bishopric of Konstanz (a pope was even elected at the Council of Constance in the 15th century). It goes without saying that the city adorns itself with magnificent buildings. Most of the church buildings are of course used for other purposes today, but the medieval tradition still lives on in some walls, for example in hospital cellars in Niederburg, where wine has been pressed in medieval cellars for 800 years.

No shopping bags, just memories

“You can’t come to hospital cellars without trying our wines,” says winemaker Hubert Böttcher, 54. Baden hospitality. And so we sip the local Müller-Thurgau, Pinot Blanc, Gutedel, and plump Pinot Noir.

At the end of the day, we sit comfortably drunk on the shore of Lake Constance, the boats bobbing on the waves, in the distance where Alpstein is clad in a golden robe. This time we don’t carry shopping bags with us, we take our memories home with us. also beautiful

practical information

Transport: It gets very crowded in Konstanz, especially on Saturdays, so it’s worth traveling by train. If you are coming by car, you should stay away from the city center and park, for example, at the Bondenseeforum. From there the hydrofoil crosses the Rhine to the old town.
