A heat wave has swept through much of Europe and the United States.

Peter Kalmus, 49, is a climate researcher at NASA and has long been downright helpless over the inaction of politicians and the indifference of the public. He regularly warns of global warming and its deadly consequences for humans on Twitter – as it can now be observed again.

In the face of the recent heat wave that has taken control of large parts of Europe and the USA, Kalmus writes: “Many people still do not realize the danger they are in. This is going to be the coolest post of the rest of your life and it shouldn’t be just a meme – it must be really horrible.

In another tweet, he noted that there are always regional and annual variations, but on average the temperature trends are such that summer is the coldest.

Billions of lives at risk

Kalmus has been calling for the end of fossil fuel use as soon as possible. If the world and society goes into emergency mode, it’s possible to cool the planet again by the end of the century.

“The faster we do this, the more lives we can save.” Kalmus also speaks: “Make no mistake: These floods, heat domes, fires and smoke formations are only the beginning of the world’s collapse, and the damage is almost irreversible.” Billions of lives are at risk.

WHO: Action needed

Given the heatwave, the European office of the World Health Organization (WHO) warns that the community needs to be prepared. Hans Kluge, WHO Regional Director for Europe, said that on the one hand, a person should protect himself and his fellows as soon as possible, and on the other hand, the right precautions for the future should be taken long ago.

Regional and global measures are urgently needed to effectively combat the climate crisis, which poses an existential threat to humanity. All sides of the political spectrum should view the fight against climate change as a bilateral issue. (what is that)
