When it comes to wine, the right drinking temperature is almost as important as the wine itself. A warm rose from Provence is as exciting as a Barolo coming out of an ice bucket. However, warm summer temperatures encourage many wine enthusiasts to enjoy their wines extra chilly.

Refrigerators are well suited for bringing white, rosé or sparkling wines to the right temperature. However, it is not recommended to store wines in the refrigerator for a long time.

Wine spoils more quickly if stored too cold.

Constant temperatures between 10 and 15 degrees Celsius and humidity around 70 percent are ideal storage conditions for wine. For this, the room where the wine is stored must be free from vibration and unpleasant odors. Longer storage of wine in the refrigerator is against these criteria.

Most refrigerators are set at four to six degrees Celsius. If a wine is stored in the refrigerator for a long time, the cork will shrink slightly. This can cause oxygen to be drawn into the wine and cause the wine to age faster.

Effect on wine taste

Most refrigerators vibrate, even if you don’t notice it. The effects of continuous vibrations on wine are not fully understood. However, a study published in the Journal of Food Composition and Analysis showed that excessive vibration can cause a number of undesirable problems in wine.

However, it has been proven that strong foreign odors can have an effect on the taste of wine, such as when a strong-smelling cheese is stored in the refrigerator with wine longer.

A few days or weeks in the fridge for a wine is fine. But there are better places to store wine for longer – for example a wine storage cabinet or an air-conditioned wine cellar.
