‘Like an acid trip’: Mel Gibson teases ‘The Passion of the Christ’ sequel

has time and time again Mel Gibson about which he spoke, he wrote his controversial biblical epic “The agony of Christ(2004) after almost 20 years – now his plans are becoming more and more concrete. Earlier this year, the Lethal Weapon star announced he would begin filming sometime in 2023.

And now he has revealed the first details. So far it was known that the sequel will be released next year and that Jim Caviezel (“Sound Of Freedom”) will be seen again in the role of Jesus Christ. But why did it take so long? and how can you”The Passion of Christ 2(the full original title is: “The Passion Of Christ: Resurrection”)?

In an interview on the YouTube channel Excellent screenplays Gibson revealed why the project alone took nearly a decade to develop – and then it took another 10 years to actually bring the movie to the big screen. The Braveheart director explained that the sequel is “a huge undertaking” that cannot be taken “light and fast”. “You really have to think about what you have to show to make it a gripping film,” said the 67-year-old.

Together with Randall Wallace (writer of “Braveheart” and director of Gibson’s war film “We Were Heroes”), Mel Gibson is currently writing two (!) scripts for the Bible sequel, and both would be very different from each other. “I have two scripts. One of them is very structured, very strong and more like what you would expect from this material,” explains the actor and filmmaker. “And the other one is like a sour trip. It really goes to other realms and stuff. I mean you are in hell watching the angels fall. It’s totally crazy!”

Does “The Passion of the Christ 2” also spark controversy?

It will be interesting to see how many of the two versions will actually flow into the finished movie, which will be about the resurrection of Jesus. But we’d be more excited about the promised acid trip with all the pictures from hell. Anyway, it can be assumed that “The Passion of the Christ 2” will become a much-discussed movie: part 1 was hugely successful with a worldwide gross of $ 612 million (with a budget of 30 million) – at the same time turned violent porn praised from many quarters – and even accusations of anti-Semitism.
