The history of amusement parks in Europe dates back to the 16th century. At that time Dyrehavsbakken in Copenhagen was the first amusement park to open its doors. “Bakken”, which the Danes call a park, was created after the discovery of a natural water source. The park, which was opened as a nature park, continues to exist today. It is home to the oldest wooden roller coaster.

Today there are more than 1000 amusement parks with toys. Potential visitors are spoiled for choice. But which amusement park is best for whom? Travelcircus has compiled a list of the best theme parks on the continent.

You can find ten of the best here

1. Europa Park in Rust

Although most children over the age of ten have fun at Europapark in Rust (D), this park is also very suitable for the little ones. The park offers a lot of adrenaline as most of the trails are here.

2. Efteling Walking Park

The former walking park Efteling (Netherlands) is open 365 days a year. Children are especially well looked after here. The park has themed toys for children under the age of four, a fairy tale forest, and many attractions.

3. Disneyland in Paris

Disneyland Paris has the best offer for little kids. 90 percent of the attractions are suitable for children under the age of four. But Disney World in Paris is also by far the most expensive park.

4. Energylandia in Zator

The largest amusement park in Poland offers 123 entertainments for all ages. The offer is really huge and thematically divided. The adrenaline zone offers extraordinary entertainment for those who want to overcome their fears, and the fairyland is especially great for young children.

5. PortAventura World Vila-seca

Portaventura is Spain’s largest amusement park. Here is also Europe’s fastest roller coaster. Young and older children can have fun at Portaventura. 33 of the 50 entertainment centers are suitable for children under the age of four. However, it gets very hot in the middle of summer.

6. Liseberg amusement park

Liseberg amusement park near Gothenburg is Sweden’s largest. It has 20 attractions for young children and adrenaline-charged toys for adults.

7. in Linnanmaki, Helsinki

The park whose name means something like Castle Hill, popularly called Lintsi, is located in the center of the city. Linnanmäki has about 40 attractions of various sizes. The best known is the wooden roller coaster Vuoristorata, built in 1951.

8. Gardaland near Verona

Gardaland (I) on Lake Garda is one of the cheapest parks in Europe. Also suitable for children: There are many attractions in an enchanted forest. Gardaland allows guests over the age of twelve to stay in all lanes. But with its shows and attractions, the park is also very suitable for young children.

9. alton towers, Stoke in Trent

Alton Towers is one of the UK’s most famous amusement parks. The oldest roller coaster is the Corkscrew, a roller coaster with two reverse turns. The park offers a variety of attractions for all ages and is perfectly located for tourists.

10 toverland in Sevenum

Located just 15 minutes from the German border, this Dutch amusement park is hugely popular with 35 events and shows. During the summer you can stay here at the Toverland campsite Pop-Up Summer Camp with tent locations and furnished tents.

The major amusement park rankings selected the 25 best amusement parks in Europe. The top 10 are explored in more detail here.

The first thing that catches your eye is the hefty price difference. If a family of four can enter the park in Gardaland (I) near the Swiss border for just under 170 francs, admission to Disneyland Paris costs 450 francs – with no meals. Parking is also expensive. Depending on the park, the cost of the parking space alone is more than 30 francs.

Not all amusement parks are suitable for children

For the little ones in the family, amusement parks sometimes offer surprisingly little. For this reason, admission is free for young children under a certain age in many parks. But not all amusement parks are lavish here, some even charge children’s fees for three-year-olds. The bad thing about it: Water slides and roller coasters are usually only accessible from a certain height. This means that minors are excluded from many attractions.

Few client-friendly parks understand this. At these amusement parks, children only pay if they are over a certain size. In Gardaland in Italy, children under one meter are free, while in Liseberg, Sweden, young guests up to 110 centimeters are allowed in without paying an entrance fee.
