Domaine de Montbourgeau

About a two-hour drive from Lausanne or Geneva, you can reach the sleepy village of L’Étoile in the French Jura. A feature of the viticulture region of the same name is the restriction of white wine, whether dry varieties or sweet straw wine Vin de Paille. One of the most important wineries within L’Étoile is the Domaine de Montbourgeau, which spans over 11 hectares. César Dériaux (28) runs the winery together with his fourth-generation brother, Baptiste (32).

After a tour of the vineyards in glorious sunshine and steel blue skies, César shows me the historic cellars of the winery, where precious wines are stored in old wooden barrels. Among them is the Jura specialty Vin Jaune, which envisages a storage period of at least five years, under a thin layer of yeast, without filling the wine in the meantime.

2016 Domaine de Montbourgeau Vin Jaune exudes intense aromas of curry and the finest notes of crushed apples, bread crust and hazelnuts. On the palate, the wine is round, full and wonderfully salty in finish. Other white wines such as 2018 Savagnin and 2020 Chardonnay are also vibrant and filigree these days. Montbourgeau wines have long had a worldwide fan base, so more than half of them are exported abroad.

Chateau d’Arlay

Château d’Arlay is the home of the chateau owner Comte Alain de Laguiche (67) and his wife Anne (65). The neoclassical building was built around 1774 and occupies an imposing estate with historical ruins on it. The Laguiche couple not only lived in the castle, but also opened it to the public. In addition to wine tasting, the castle tour includes a trip to the hill where you can enjoy panoramic views of the vineyards.

An exciting wine from Chateau d’Arlay is Corail, the common fermentation of all five grape varieties allowed in the Jura: Pinot Noir, Trousseau, Poulsard, Chardonnay and Savagnin. The wine is vibrant, showing a beautiful complexity and a flexible body. Other wines also cut a good figure with the qualitative crown of Vin Jaune developed by oxidation. And if you are looking for a unique place for your wedding: you can also get married at the Château d’Arlay.

Domaine André and Mireille Tissot

The work at this famous winery stands out from other companies in several ways. Biodynamic viticulture has been practiced for 20 years, aiming to produce the most sustainable treatment of nature as well as impressive wines. Also, some red wines are completely sulfur-free, keeping the use of added sulfur as low as possible. The winery also works with a terroir concept and wants individual locations and soil to be reflected in the wines.

The result: more than 30 different bottlings per year, provided nature permits. The current Tissot generation, Bénédicte and Stéphane Tissot, are among the only winemakers in the Jura to bottle Vin Jaune separately from different locations. Located in the very center of Arbois at 35 Place de la Liberté, its modern shops invite you to taste these unique wines. Our insider tip: the intricate Chardonnay Rose Masssale.
