Nicolas Cage was set to play Dracula before “Renfield” – in the film adaptation of a cult video game

In an Instagram post, director and horror specialist James Wan (‘Saw’, ‘Conjuring’, ‘Malignant’, among others) explains how much fun he had with Renfield, revealing that he had been dating Nicolas Cage for years and spoke Dracula. Cage was set to play Dracula in James Wan’s film adaptation of the cult video game series Castlevania. But unfortunately it did not come to thatthe project came to nothing.

Back in 2009, Wan announced that he was working on “Castlevania” – based on the video game series launched in 1986, in which you have to fight your way through Dracula’s castle as a vampire hunter in the opening part. The game series now includes nearly two dozen titles and is considered one of the most successful video game franchises.

Netflix series instead of a movie starring Nicolas Cage

But nothing ever came of Wan’s cinema project. In 2017, streaming service Netflix instead released an animated series “Castlevania”, in which Dracula has a vendetta against humans and vampire hunter Trevor Belmont has to stop him. The series had a total of four seasons and ended in 2021. The universe itself should live on with Netflix.

The streaming service is currently working on the sequel series “Castlevania: Nocturne”, set during the French Revolution. The focus is on the video game familiar Judge Belmont, a descendant of vampire hunter Trevor Belmont and the magician Sypha from the original series. Maria Renard, also known from video games, also plays an important role. Both would probably have to deal with Dracula again, who is also voiced by Graham McTavish in the original English version.
