Chat GPT has been keeping us busy for months. Meanwhile, the initial research into cutting-edge technology has already been developed. This also applies to the University of Zurich (UZH). Their latest research shows that Chat-GPT is skilled at spreading fake news.
For example, participants had more trouble recognizing fake news in Chat-GPT-generated tweets than human-generated tweets.
At the same time, participants had a better understanding of Chat-GPT-generated tweets, as the study, published Wednesday evening in the journal Science Advances, showed. Study participants were unable to reliably distinguish which tweets were written by Chat-GPT and which were written by humans. “The GPT-3 is a double-edged sword,” the researchers wrote in the study.
Chatbot gives information more efficiently than humans
For the study, researchers at the University of Zurich had 697 participants aged 26 to 76 guess whether a tweet was written by a real Twitter user or by Chat-GPT-3. In addition, the participants were asked whether the tweets were correct. Topics of tweets included the corona pandemic and vaccine safety, climate change, and homeopathic treatments for cancer.
Participants noticed misinformation that was 92 percent likely created by humans and 89 percent likely generated by Chat-GPT. Additionally, human-generated tweets took longer, on average, for participants to determine if a tweet was true. According to the research, this indicates that GPT-3 provides information “more efficiently” from humans.
These results suggest that, for example, as UZH wrote in a communication about the study, information campaigns created by the GPT-3 (but evaluated by trained people) will be more effective in crisis situations. But the findings also show risks. That’s why in the UZH report, researchers advocate for strict, evidence-based and ethically sound regulations to counter the potential threat posed by these technologies. (SDA)
