How do I recognize sunstroke?
- Sunstroke can occur after being in the sun. Usually just a few hours later.
Sunstroke symptoms include:
- A red head, neck pain or stiffness, as well as headache and dizziness.
- Symptoms such as nausea and vomiting or tinnitus may also occur.
- The head is very hot, but the body feels normal or quite cold.
How is it different from heatstroke?
- In heatstroke, the body temperature is greatly increased. It is usually above 40 degrees.
Typical symptoms of heat stroke include:
- A red hot head, hot and dry skin, increased heart rate, and an astonishing gait.
- Therefore, while the whole body feels hot in heat stroke, only the head is affected in sunstroke.
What should we do?
- Go to the shade now
- Lie flat on the ground.
- Elevate your head and upper body.
- Cool your head and neck with damp, cold towels or a cold compress.
Danger:
- Do not take them straight out of the freezer as the extreme cold will put additional strain on the body.
- Make a neck porridge (ragen, yogurt) with cool yogurt or quark.
- Dissolve a spoonful of table salt in a glass.
- Take a sip of this mixture every ten minutes.
- Drink isotonic drinks as soon as possible, but not ice cold.
How is it avoided?
- Ideally, use a light-colored hood that also protects the neck.
- You should also avoid prolonged sunbathing and outdoor activities in the midday heat.
- Make sure you stay in the shade for a while.
In case of high temperature:
- If possible, wear airy and light clothing.
- Consume enough soft drinks.
