Hollywood Academy Honorary Awards

The Hollywood Academy announced in a statement Monday that actress Angela Bassett, actor-writer-director Mel Brooks and editor Carol Littleton will be honored in November.

The institution also noted that the Jean Hersholt Humanitarian Award will be presented to dfounder of the program of Sundance Independent Film Festival feature films, Michelle Satter.

Four statuettes will be handed over to 14th Annual Academy Governors Awards Ceremony, which will take place on Saturday November 18 in Los Angeles (California).

“The Academy’s Board of Trustees is thrilled to recognize four pioneers who have transformed the film industry and inspired generations of filmmakers and moviegoers,” Academy President Janet Yang said in a statement.

Yang pointed out “transcendental interpretations” Bassett, the “humor” of Brooks, the “model” of work left by Littleton in film editing, as well as the struggle for the impulse of independent cinematography by Satter.

The honorary award of the Academy is a statuette Oscar which is awarded “in honor of outstanding recognition for life’s work, exceptional contribution to the state of film art and science, or for outstanding services to the Academy”, according to information from that institution.

This will be the first Oscar for Bassett, who received her first nomination for the award in 1994 for her portrayal of the late Tina Turner in “What’s Love Got To Do With It” (1993).

In 2023, Bassett was also nominated for Best Supporting Actress for her Ramonda’s interpretation in the Marvel film “Black Panther: Wakanda Forever”.

Mel Brooks, for his part, received his first award as a screenwriter at the prestigious awards ceremony with “Producers” from 1968. and in 1975 he was nominated for his work as composer and writer of the song “Blazing Saddles”.

Carol Littleton was nominated only once at the award ceremony. Hollywood Academy Awardsand it was in 1983 for her work as an editor on the film “ET The Extra-Terrestrial”, directed by Steven Spielberg.

The 96th Academy Awards will take place on March 10, 2024 at the Dolby Theater in Los Angeles, and the show will be broadcast live on ABC in more than 200 territories worldwide.
