In a simulation using new technology, smoke figures are made to dance.

A technology developed at the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology (ETH Zurich) in Zurich has made it possible to realistically depict beings made of fire or water, as the university announced on Thursday.

“When I see how fascinating the effects are in ‘Elemental,’ and especially in Ember, I’m excited that our research is the starting point for that,” said Barbara Solenthaler. She is a professor of computer graphics, she. Under his direction, the technology was developed in 2019 and 2020.

“Elemental” by Walt Disney Studios and Pixar Animation Studios takes place in a world inhabited by human-like natural elements. The main character Ember is made of fire. Technology from ETH Zurich has made it possible to transfer an originally artistically designed flame structure to Ember’s appearance in such a way that the fire and flames in Ember’s body appear extremely realistic, as the university writes.

“Our technology can transfer the structure of any input image to smoke, flames, and even liquids,” Solenthaler explained. According to the researcher, this also makes possible an artistic and natural representation.

Zurich is not the first appearance of the technology: it was already used in the computer-animated fantasy movie “Raya and the Last Dragon”, which was released in 2021.
