The Hollywood Academy announced this Wednesday a new requirement for those productions that decide to apply in the Best Picture category for the 97th Academy Awards, scheduled for March 10, 2024.
Until today, in movies it was enough for the contestants that they had broadcast circuit to be limited to a week of exhibition in one of the six capitals of the United States, according to what her managers recalled in a statement.
However, from now on, films must be shown for 7 more days, consecutively or not, in 10 of the top 50 cities in the United States, for a maximum of 45 days after the initial release. Likewise, projecting yourself out there NOW will calculate how to do this in two of these markets.
This extension of the period of exhibitions in the roomswhich does not affect the other parts of the tender, must be completed no later than January 24, 2024.
“We hope that this change will increase cinematic visibility around the world and encourage audiences to experience our art in theaters,” said Academy Executive Director Bill Kramer and Academy President Janet Yang after decision approved by 54 members of the board of directors.
Through this change, Academy it tries to counteract the specific gravity of the platforms streaming like Netflix, Amazon or Apple, which in many cases work as real showcases for competing films with few screenings in cinemas and, occasionally, with a noticeable lack of public interest.
However, the new criteria could harmful films smaller budget independent films, which will now have to struggle to find a place in the context in which the films produced by platforms themselves will play with the advantage of being able to invest more in their distribution.
Likewise, the change serves to quiet the criticism that continues to surround the Hollywood Academy after last year’s actress Andrea Riseborough was nominated in the category of best actress with Uncle Leslie “indie” production that could not even be presented according to the criteria of that season.
