Yoga has become a trending sport in recent years.

The term yoga originally comes from Sanskrit and means something like “union” or “integration”. It can also be understood to mean “running” or “stretching” the body to the spirit. June 21 is World Yoga Day. The UN General Assembly urges governments to draw attention to the “benefits of doing yoga”.

Yoga is a philosophical teaching from the Indian subcontinent that encompasses a variety of mental and physical practices. In addition to physical exercises called asanas, this includes breathing exercises, meditation or an ascetic lifestyle.

The most common form of yoga in the West is called Hatha Yoga. It is characterized above all by its focus on asanas, breathing exercises and deep relaxation.

Where does yoga come from?

To get to the origins of yoga, you have to go back a few thousand years in history. However, until the time of the Indian scholar Patanjali, yoga was passed down through generations only orally. He was the first to write down the teachings and wrote the Yoga Sutra between the second and fourth centuries AD; this is still considered the standard work of philosophical yoga today.

Patanjali’s teachings are very close to emerging Buddhism at that time. Both Patanjali and Buddha are devoted to the inner path of separation from human suffering to liberating knowledge. Already in the second sutra, Patanjali gives us the basic meaning or purpose of the Far Eastern teachings: “Yoga is the inner state in which soul-spiritual processes are at rest.”

yoga today

In addition to the classical ways of yoga that Patanjali describes, a number of alternative forms have been developed in recent years and decades, particularly in the West.

These are still based on the basic ideas of Hatha Yoga. Here too, special attention is paid to physical exercises and the goal is mental relaxation. However, the spiritual consideration of the original yoga paths plays a rather secondary role. The main focus is on strengthening and stabilizing the body, reducing stress and finding inner peace. In this way, the general well-being of body and mind should be strengthened.

yoga and health

Many people swear by yoga, whether from a spiritual perspective or simply because the practice makes them feel more physically and mentally fit.

Yoga has a reputation for being particularly healthy. And in many ways. Regularly attending yoga classes not only improves posture and body awareness, but can also have a positive impact on stress-related ailments such as high blood pressure, headaches, stomachaches or backaches.

However, yoga is not good for the body and asanas can alleviate psychological complaints such as depression, fatigue, exhaustion, fear or bad mood.

Yoga is also considered healthy for pregnant women and is offered by many clinics specifically tailored to these clients. Among other things, it improves the well-being of mother and child, helps against back pain and improves posture.

Can yoga be dangerous?

Although yoga may seem very gentle, it is still possible to get injured while stretching and stretching. Especially at the beginning, you should not overdo yourself during the exercises. Likewise, the people most likely to injure themselves are those who do advanced exercises too quickly and too ambitious.

The most common injuries are low back, shoulder, neck or wrist injuries. But nerve damage or knee problems can also occur under certain conditions – for example, if you stay in the lotus position for too long.

However, the benefits of yoga far outweigh the disadvantages. Compared to other sports, there are fewer injuries and yoga has proven to be healthy. Above all, it is important to have a good teacher who gives correct instruction and responds to students individually.
