Season six of Netflix’s “Black Mirror” has left viewers frustrated

In June, one of the most popular series on Netflix returned with “Black Mirror” – the fans had been waiting for the sixth season for a long time, now there are five new episodes of the science fiction bundle. Salma Hayek, Kate Mara and Aaron Paul, among others, stood in front of the camera for the episodes.

However, after its release, the latest chapter is causing a lot of confusion among fans. The series now deviates strongly from the previous line, or comes with new elements. That is not well received everywhere, according to the reactions on social media.

“Black Mirror” has traditionally been about technological innovations and highlights how people interact with them. The result is usually very bleak, happy endings are extremely rare in the series.

It is precisely this socially critical note that many fans miss in the current season. A user is therefore “disappointed” after two episodes.

In addition, some of the new episodes are based on (sub) genres that have not or hardly been covered in “Black Mirror” until now. For example, ‘Loch Henry’ surfs on the true crime wave that is currently thriving in the streaming services. On the other hand, there are horror tapes in “Demon 79”.

A viewer therefore settles with the series on Twitter and rages: “‘Black Mirror’ season six eventually even moves away from its own brand entirely.” For him, the format “should have ended three seasons ago”.

Elsewhere, the verdict is a little more forgiving. This user comments: “‘Demon 79’ from ‘Black Mirror’ season 6 may not even have been a ‘classic’ ‘Black Mirror’ episode, but it was the one episode where I ended up shedding a few tears.” However, the episode “Mazy Day” received only two points out of five from the viewer.

Maybe “Black Mirror” should even be renamed because of the new orientation? At least this suggestion is circulating on social media. In any case, a viewer finds clear words: “If there are no more ideas that fit the original concept, okay – but then it’s better to call it something else.”

Series creator Charlie Brooker had previously announced changes were coming. The risk of scaring off some fans was therefore deliberately taken. Before the release of “Tudum”, Brooker stated, “Not every episode of the new season is going to be exactly what you expect – but that’s the whole point.”

Before season six, he even questioned his own principles as a showrunner – “partly as a challenge, partly to keep things fresh for both me and the audience.”
