Date changes at Disney: In 2026 we can expect 2 (!) new “Star Wars” films in the cinema

While the heroes of the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) can experience their adventures both on Disney+ and in theaters, “Star Wars” was recently only available in serial form on the mouse studio’s in-house streaming service: “Andor”, “The Mandalorian” season 3 or the second season of “Star Wars: Visions”. And while these are high-quality productions that have generally been well received by fans and critics alike, the franchise’s intergalactic adventures belong on the big screen!

The series was last represented here in 2019 with “Star Wars 9: The Rise of Skywalker”, with the provisional end of the Skywalker saga not only met with enthusiasm by the fans. But already in April of this year, Disney announced at the Star Wars Celebration that a total of 3 new films will find their way to the cinema.

But Disney has once again shaken up its schedule, announcing not only theatrical releases for a number of highly anticipated film projects, but also postponed dates that were already known. In addition to MCU projects and the ‘Avatar’ sequels, the new ‘Star Wars’ cinema projects are also affected.

2 “Star Wars” movies in 2026

A “Star Wars” movie previously scheduled for December 2025 has been pushed back to May 22, 2026. This movie is possibly the sequel to the Skywalker saga, in which Rey Skywalker (again played by Daisy Ridley) tries to rebuild the Jedi Order. This film is the most advanced in its development. Therefore, it is believed that this film project will be the first to appear. Disney has not yet officially confirmed this.

This won’t be the only “Star Wars” movie we’ll see in 2026, either: Just 5 months later, set for December 18, 2026, another “Star Wars” cinema project start date has been announced. However, it’s unknown if this will be the Dave Filoni-directed movie that will bring the Mandoverse he and Jon Favreau created to the big screen, or if it will bring us the “Star Wars” epic of “Indiana.” Jones 5″ director James Mangold is expected in late 2026. With this comes a film that takes place about 25,000 years before the “Star Wars” trilogies and is supposed to tell the story of the first Jedis.

Here we explain how all these movies fit into the previous canon of the saga:

Another “Star Wars” movie is sticking to its release date of December 17, 2027, so it wasn’t mentioned in the announcements. So there are now dates for three upcoming movies, which ties in nicely with the three projects announced so far. It remains to be seen whether these will actually arrive on the start dates. There are also projects that have not yet been announced but are still in the works – such as one from director Taika Waititi.
