John Carpenter is known for many films, including “Halloween”, “The Thing From Another World” or “The Rattlesnake” – all classics in the contemporary horror and science fiction genre. His third film from 1974 is in danger of getting lost there, even though “Dark Star” was an inspiration for later science fiction productions. While at the time the film was only intended to pay homage to Stanley Kubrick’s 2001: A Space Odyssey, many consider it a cult film and even a masterpiece, especially in Quentin Tarantino’s estimation, as he revealed on the podcast. The lists of cult films are largely similar. You may not have heard much about 1974’s Dark Star, which may be due to the fact that the movie was actually a student project of future cult director John Carpenter and Dan O’Bannon. At first glance, the film can be summarized fairly quickly: low budget, an appearance that takes some getting used to and, at first glance, quite nerdy.

“Dark Star” is therefore the absolute opposite of the aesthetic and artistic “2001: A Space Odyssey” and you have to be prepared for that. However, the film works very well in its own way, which is superficially due to the weird, but also satirical humor at other times. What exactly do I mean? We say Monty Pythonmovies are weird “Dr Strange Or: How I Learned to Love the Bomb” on the other hand, is on the satirical side. Dark Star falls right in between the two, which is what makes the movie so memorable.

Two aspects are intended to make this clearer: On the one hand, there is the alien form, which couldn’t look weirder and crazier in sci-fi movie history. This creature looks downright sloppy, but that’s exactly what Carpenter wanted. “Dark Star” doesn’t take itself seriously, on the contrary, you can tell by the characters, see the next picture. Carpenter strikes a perfect balance because: It never gets too nerdy or ridiculous.

It gets even crazier when Hollywood mastermind Quentin Tarantino talks about the movie. On the podcast The video archive with Roger Avery he praises it to the skies and also goes into small movie details that George Lucas stole for “Star Wars”. As he cult director says:
