Bad news for fans? That’s why “Constantine 2” with Keanu Reeves doesn’t do well at all

Rumors have been circulating for a long time, but for years there was simply no movement in the repeatedly suggested sequel to the comedy adaptation “Constantine” with Keanu Reeves. A sequel was rumored as far back as Fall 2022, until February 2023 when things really got moving when screenwriter and producer Akiva Goldsman confirmed that Constantine 2 would definitely be filmed – again starring Keanu Reeves (“John Wick: Chapter 4″) in front of the camera and Francis Lawrence (“Red Sparrow”) in the director’s chair.

However, some time has passed since September 2022 or April 2023 and “Constantine 2” has been suspiciously quiet again in recent months. Part of the reason for this will no doubt be that the future of DC movies was turned upside down a bit when it was confirmed that James Gunn and Peter Safran would be the new heads of DC Studios. While it was said that Constantine 2 would continue to release under the DC Studio banner, there has been no news since then. Then there’s the writers’ strike, which brought almost all of Hollywood to a standstill.

Sobering answers

Influential producer Lorenzo Di Bonaventura, who is behind “Constantine 2” among others, is currently giving interviews in the wake of the latest “Transformers” blockbuster “Transformers 7: Rise of the Beasts”. In conversation with Brandon Davis from Bonvanetura was now also asked about the current status of the sequel “Constantine”. His answer is very sobering:

“I don’t know. I’m not as involved as others. So I’m not sure what stage we’re at right now.”

Bonaventura isn’t alone in this uncertainty, which should certainly worry fans. also recently did an interview with Keanu Reeves and also addressed him on “Constantine 2”. He also falls into words that “Constantine” aficionados may not particularly like: “I was hoping Constantine 2 ‘was coming, but we don’t know.”

And that’s pretty significant if neither Keanu Reeves nor Lorenzo Di Bonaventura can provide any information about the current situation of “Constantine 2”. But that doesn’t mean the sequel didn’t happen at all. The new DC Universe is quite happy to deviate (from time to time) from the classic superhero formula, which is confirmed by “Swamp Thing”, for example. However, “Constantine 2” doesn’t seem to be a particularly high priority for the studio. Not least because Part 1 is now a cult movie, but it didn’t really hit the box office.
