It must have been a big revelation to fans of the JRR Tolkien original and newcomers to The Lord of the Rings alike when Galadriel (Morfydd Clark) explained in episode 7 that she had not only lost her brother Finrod in Morgoth and his helpers Sauron, but also her husband Celeborn. One group will probably have thought “What, Galadriel is married?”, the others sighed with relief “Finally Galadriel’s husband is called Celeborn – so no break with the original after all!”.
However, everyone must have been surprised that Galadriel thought Celeborn was dead. So is Celeborn actually dead in The Rings of Power and does the Amazon series deviate from the template here? No, Galadriel immediately gives an important detail: Celeborn went into battle against Sauron and that was the last time they saw him . This is always very suspicious when it comes to dead figures. So Galadriel thinks she’s a widow because her husband didn’t come back from the war – but we’re pretty sure he will in season 2 or at least season 3.

Because Celeborn expects a long life in the Tolkien source material. The Elf lives and reigns at Galadriel’s side until the Third Age – we know him as the Lord of Lothlorien from the Lord of the Rings movies, played by Marton Csokas:

But why was Celeborn so far not only swept under the rug in “The Rings of Power”, but is now also believed dead by Galadriel? We believe: The intention here is to create space for the relationship between Galadriel and Halbrand (Charlie Vickers), whether or not they develop into a romantic character. So far it’s been a friendship, a bond of trust, and there have been flirtations – the scene in episode 6 on the log, for example, when they reveal what it felt like to go into battle together.
No matter how far it develops: A relationship is being built here that should make sense, so that the break we await is all the more serious for Galadriel. For at this point, all indications are that Halbrand either turns out to be Sauron or later becomes one of the human kings seduced by Sauron with the rings, who go on to serve Sauron as Ringwraiths aka Nazgûl.
And that would probably be harder with a lively husband in Galadriel’s Vita, especially since he’d probably even be by her side, which would have made her entire solo effort thus far in “The Rings of Power” logically hard to explain. . In addition, her very personal hatred of Morgoth and Sauron is now even more tangible, because she will soon believe it have lost loved ones to them.
But why has Galadriel been silent about Celeborn for so long and now reveals her intimate memory of their first meeting to Theo (Tyroe Muhafidin) of all people? Galadriel actress Morfydd explains that to Clark as follows: “The fact that Celeborn is dead is something that has completely separated her from herself. It’s like she can’t handle it.” It is the wisdom and openness of the child Theo that causes her to open up to him:
“It’s part of the Elves’ development to realize that they have limitations, that they too can be bad, and that they have things to learn. I think with Galadriel and Theo, the kid who hasn’t seen much can recognize him more than she does.”
Warning, book spoilers for Celeborn and Galadriel’s future! The fact that Celeborn cannot be dead is related not only to his character’s existence in the future of the “Lord of the Rings” universe, but also to that of another heroine we all know: because Galadriel and Celeborn have a daughter named Celebrían. She marries half-elf Elrond (Robert Aramayo). Together they have three children: twins Elladan and Elrohir, and a daughter named Arwen…
