The litter box often turns into a breeding ground for maggots during the summer months.

Especially during the warm seasons, the trash can or garbage container becomes one of the preferred breeding grounds for maggots. These offspring of ordinary houseflies feed on decaying food scraps. For this reason, flies like to lay their eggs where the larvae can find food. But what helps against white worms?

With the tips and tricks below, maggot scourge in your trash will soon be a thing of the past.

Avoid rather than destroy

Maggots can be easily destroyed with a few simple tricks. But before you ask yourself what works against maggots, it’s often easier to prevent maggot breeding grounds from appearing with the following tips.

  • Any leftovers that may start to rot – especially leftover meat – simply throw them into a sealed container. This can be done in small bags or leftover packaging material.

  • Make sure the litter box is dry as maggots love moisture. Also, place newsprint at the bottom of the bucket to absorb moisture.

  • Always close the litter box properly so that flies do not enter the litter and therefore do not lay eggs.

  • Dispose of waste regularly

  • After each emptying, hose the bin with water and rinse with vinegar water. Since maggots do not like the smell of vinegar, a cloth sprinkled with vinegar can also be placed over the trash can.

Maggots can be avoided with these home remedies

But despite all the clues, flies can lay their eggs in the trash and countless maggots can play around in it. With simple methods, the creepy little worms can be avoided so that looking in the trash is no longer associated with nausea.

  • vinegar essence: A tablespoon of vinegar essence dissolved in a liter of water.
You can sprinkle maggots with this mixture. Maggots die and you can easily remove them. After that, the litter box does not need to be washed either, as maggots do not like the smell of vinegar.

  • Pepper: Boil water and add pepper. After cooling, pour the pepper juice into a spray bottle. It is sprayed on maggots in the litter box. These die and can be destroyed. The water and pepper mixture also disinfects the litter box.

  • wood chips: Maggots in the compost bin can also be combated with sawdust. Maggots don’t feel comfortable in it.

  • saline solution: Pour salt water over the maggots. Salt draws moisture from maggots. If the solution isn’t strong enough, sprinkle some more salt on the maggots.
