It all started in 1990 with vehicles built for the Porsche Carrera Cup Germany. Since then, the 911 Cup has become one of the most produced racing cars in the world. Unit number 5000 will compete in the Porsche Mobil 1 Supercup during the 2023 season. Porsche Motorsport will offer this 510 PS (375 kW) 911 GT3 Cup to prominent guest drivers in selected races.
The tradition of racing VIP cars in the Porsche Supercup is long. During the 2023 season, the celebrated guest drivers will take part in a very special Porsche 911 GT3 Cup: the 5,000th unit built for the cup by one brand. This celebration will take place in some selected Super Cup events. Likewise, the car numbered 911 will wear a special decoration to distinguish it from the other 30 cars on the grid.
“More than 5,000 units of the 911 Cup: this impressive figure symbolizes like no other the enormous success of our single-manufacturer Porsche Cups around the world. It also represents the high level of popularity of Porsche among teams, racing professionals, young drivers and amateurs all over the world. There is no other Porsche racing car that was produced in such large numbers or raced so often,” said Oliver Köppen, director of One-Make and the GT Championship.
What began in 1990 as the first 911 cup, the Porsche Carrera Cup Germany, has become a success story with a total of 34 Porsche-sanctioned championships of this type contested worldwide. Over the decades, the cup concept has spread from the Weissach development center to almost all continents. The Porsche Carrera Cup is currently held in Europe, America, Asia, the Middle East and Australia. The International Porsche Supercup has been the ultimate expression since 1993. During the 2023 season, the Supercup will compete in eight Formula 1 Grand Prix weekends in Europe as part of a support program.
Since the debut of the Porsche Carrera Cup Germany in April 1990, the one-make Porsche Cups have evolved incredibly. This season, the number has risen to 34 worldwide. Almost all of them put their faith in the latest generation of the Porsche 911 GT3 Cup, the 992,” said Michael Dreiser, Sales Director of Porsche Motorsport. “This success is largely due to our customer teams, to whom I owe a special thank you.”
