The norm obligates the composition of management bodies in large companies, state and electoral lists

The Council of Ministers approved this Tuesday in the first round the Draft Law on Parity ahead of the celebration of International Women’s Day, March 8 this Wednesday. This is the first step towards equality in the composition of large companies, governments and electoral lists.

“We went from recommendations and good practices to establishment obligations which enable the achievement effective gender equality in the areas of political and economic decision-making», pointed out Vice President and Minister of Economy Nadia Calviño, in charge of presenting the text.

In addition, he noted that the future law will establish that governments must be guided by the principle of a “balanced presence” of women and men.

Another of the provisions of the future regulation refers to the fact that “the Government of Spain will also have to comply with the principle of a balanced presence of women and men, a principle with which our Government fully complies, but which discretion cannot be relied upon the president or the prime minister, in any case,” he emphasized.

The rule, which according to Calviño goes “beyond” the transposition of the European directive, will also include the mandatory nature of the so-called “zipper lists” in electoral law and equality in areas such as management boards of professional associations and juries for public recognition of personalities.
