Calls for maturity amid tensions over new mining deal

Chamber of Commerce, Industry and Agriculture of Panama (CCIAP) this Sunday he expressed his concern about the pressure measures which are both Panama Mining as the government initiated in the middle of negotiations for signing a new contract.

According to the camera, these mechanisms go beyond the negative, not only in the image of the process, but also in the lives of the hundreds of Panamanians affected by the situation who remain on the sidelines waiting for a solution.

The tension is evident, reports CCIAP At the moment, negotiations seem to have stalled.

“From the Chamber of Commerce, Industry and Agriculture of Panama, we urgently call to continue in good faith and redirect the negotiations and conclude them satisfactorily, bearing in mind that the best interests of the country must come first,” said the president of this body, Marcela Galindo De Obarrio.

In that sense, Galindo emphasizes that both parties must act maturely and look at the common goodknowing that in every negotiation it is necessary to compromise in one way or another, for the sake of understanding.

It is added that the current actions seem to remove any possibility of an agreement, thus affecting the vision of the nation, economic recovery and sustainable development; because it will also affect employment and increase the distrust of domestic and international investors.

“In this context, no one wins, we all lose. From here, we insist that it is essential to negotiate maturely and in good faith in order to reach an agreement in which the state receives revenues that correspond to it from the exploitation of its mineral resources and the company receives revenues in accordance with the risks assumed “, he specified.

Galindo He emphasized that his union is making its own instances available so that through reconciliation or mediation, ways of understanding can be found on this fundamental issue for Panama.

Minera Panama confirmed on Thursday that it has suspended mineral processing operations after Panamanian maritime authorities did not allow it to continue loading copper concentrate at the port of Punta Rincón.

As a result, demobilization began part of its workforce, which could increase if there is no understanding.

The government, for its part, rejected these pressure measures because it believes that they create unrest and uncertainty about the stability of thousands of workers and suppliers who depend on the mine.
