The project will mean the creation of 400 direct jobs and will require initial investments of 600 million euros, but the total amount is expected to exceed 1,000 million
The La Mancha town of Puertollano was chosen to build the factory production of green steel. Yesterday, promoters unveiled a project that aims to become the first greenfield steel plant in the Iberian Peninsula and one of the first in Europe, a plant designed from scratch to use non-fossil energy throughout the raw material production process. And the consortium that will raise the project has Galician talent. Specifically, the signature Russula Corporación, a company founded in A Coruña in 1988 providing solutions to the world’s largest steel producers. It will walk hand in hand with the big three: Hydnum Steel (who will lead the project), Siemens (a technology partner that guarantees sustainability with digital factory solutions) and ABEI Energy (in charge of contributing with its international experience in the production of renewable energy sources). energy).
Sources familiar with the project explain that it will be gradually installed in order to produce without the use of fossil energy green hydrogen in the production process, with the aim of significantly reducing CO2 emissions. The factory will cover an area of 1.3 million square meters, and in the first phase it will require an investment of 600 million euros and will mean the creation of about 400 direct jobs. It is expected that the total planned investment will exceed HRK 1,000 million. They assure that production is planned to start in 2026.
Priority optionThe company’s proposed location for these facilities is Puertollano. The strategic location of the enclave, the proximity of logistics hubs in the center, southern and eastern parts of Spain, as well as Portugal, were taken into account; development of already operational hydrogen production projects; suitability for production of renewable, solar and wind energy and availability of land. In addition, the presence of the National Hydrogen Center, whose headquarters are located in the city of Ciudad Real, opens up the possibility of establishing an alliance with this research field, as explained by the company.
According to the company, it is a an ideal ecosystem for the implementation of Hydnum Steel, which can take advantage of the synergies of this environment and at the same time become an important driving project at the local and regional level. Thus, the person in charge of the entity, Eva Maneiro, thanked for the institutional support of the project from Puertollano at the event: «Puertollano has a great mining and industrial past and we want it to be the benchmark for the industry of the future, designed with environmental awareness and responsibility. It will be a source of pride for all companies involved in the development of this exciting project,” he said.
