ASR acquires Aegon Nederland and becomes one of the largest Dutch insurers

A significant acquisition in the Dutch insurance world: ASR takes over the Dutch activities of Aegon. This makes ASR one of the largest insurers in the country alongside the NN Group.

The combination company has 6.5 million customers in the Netherlands and 6,700 employees. The company will soon be the market leader in the pension market and number two in the Netherlands for life insurance.

The head office remains in Utrecht. ASR says some jobs will be eliminated as a result of the merger, but will try to avoid redundancies as much as possible.

Egon disappears

ASR pays 4.9 billion euros to Aegon. This will be financed in part by issuing new shares.

Customers will find that the Aegon name is becoming less and less visible. ASR will be the main brand, the Aegon name will be used for annuities and mortgages for another three years.

The Aegon company will continue to exist, but will focus on activities abroad. The deal will only go through if multiple regulators agree.
