Panamanian cyclists Annibel Prieto, Belkys Montenegro, Maraya López and Zulianys Fernández will be part of the Soltec Iberoamérica 2024 team, the first women’s continental team in the history of Central America, the Panamanian Cycling Federation (Fepaci) announced on Tuesday.
“Soltec is a women’s team with a Spanish tradition. It is making its way hand in hand with the new power of America, a country that unites the world with its channel and that is increasingly conquering the mass cycling culture that in a few years will become in the small American ‘Holland’, Panama,” it says in a letter from the entity that manages pedal sports in the Central American country.
Team Soltec Iberoamérica, whose main sponsor is the Marcelino Oliver Foundation, led by Marcelino Oliver and Marcelino Pacheco, aims to expand women’s cycling in the area while giving girls “an opportunity to have a different experience”.
“The Ibero-American project seeks to give women’s cycling from all over Latin America the opportunity to compete on the old continent,” says Fepaci.
The note states that the Soltec Iberoamerica continental team will have a Panamanian license and will consist of girls from Panama, Guatemala, Costa Rica, Chile, Uruguay.
As well as European cycling girls from Turkey, Russia, Poland and Spain.
The project will also serve, according to the statement, to expand women’s cycling and “dream as a country (Panama) of the possibility of qualifying for the 2028 Los Angeles Olympic Games.”
