‘Panama 2023’ IX Ibero-American Chess Championship

A total of 188 players from 23 countries, including 16 grandmasters, will participate in the IX Absolute Ibero-American Chess Championship “Panama 2023”, which will be played in our country from this Friday until December 2.

Grandmaster, Spaniard Jaime Santos Latasa, European Rapid champion in 2022 and the last Magistral de León, and Cristóbal Henríquez, winner of several tournaments and considered one of the best in Chile, are the two big figures who will decide on the qualifications.

In addition, Panamanians Roberto Sánchez and Jorge Baúles, both with the title of International Master, have signed up for this event.

A total of around 88 players from Panama will compete in this competition, which was supported by the Panamanian Chess Federation, chaired by Luis Esquivel.

The tournament is conducted by the Ibero-American Chess Federation (FIBDA), in agreement with the American Chess Confederation (CCA – FIDE América), chaired by the Panamanian José Carrillo Pujol and federations related to continental chess.

Carrillo Pujol highlighted the efforts being made to position Panama as one of the best places to host a chess tournament, bringing grandmasters, who will surely attract the attention of fans and raise the level of the game.

Recently, Panama hosted the IV Panama Chess Open and Blitz Championship and the National Team Championship.

The Ibero-American will be played according to the Swiss system according to Rating Fide in 9 rounds. Pairings will be made according to the official FIDE program, Swiss manager.

Game Pace: 90 minutes per player for the entire game with 30 second increments for each move from the first move. The president of Panamanian chess said that this tournament is TRYING to promote the development of this game in the country.

Players from Andorra, Argentina, Bolivia, Brazil, Chile, Colombia, Costa Rica, Cuba, Dominican Republic, Ecuador, El Salvador, Spain, Guatemala, Honduras, Mexico, Nicaragua, Paraguay, Peru, Portugal, Porto registered for the event. Rico, Uruguay and Venezuela, among others.
