Cortizo calls a referendum to decide on the mining contract

President Laurentino Cortizo announced this Sunday that he will ask the Electoral Tribunal (TE) to call a popular consultation on Sunday, December 17, 2023, so that Panamanians can vote to decide whether or not to repeal Law 406 of the mining contract.

“I have listened with respect to those who oppose the Minera Panama contract, I believe in democracy and as president I understand the noise of voices being heard on this issue,” the president said in a brief statement.

The president stated that the will of the people can be legitimized through the participation of citizens through voting, the result of which will be binding.

Cortizo added that he would enact a ban on metal mining at the national level.
