Entities like Embassy of the United States in Panama and Chamber of Commerce, Industry and Agriculture of Panama they recommended that the contract between the state and Mining of Panamaafter he amended and approved it Cabinet Councilafter a series of public consultations conducted by the National Assembly to hear different points of view for the welfare of the country.
Both institutions reminded that this is the only and largest investment in Panama, therefore the opportunity cannot be lost to continue with the industry that today creates thousands of direct and indirect jobs.
“We hope that everything is resolved within the law and what the Panamanian law and system prescribes. This investment creates thousands of jobs, I understand the environmental concerns, I also understand the concerns about work and the ability to support families; we are talking about thousands of direct or indirect jobs, and I very much hope that this amendment that is being passed can be encouraged Assembly approve the treaty so Panama can move forward. It is the largest investment in Panama, there is no bigger investment than this, and we are not all Americans, it is an impressive range of investors…so let’s hope that there will be a happy outcome, but that it is according to the system and process that must be followed,” he said. Mari Carmen Aponte, United States Ambassador to Panama during an interview in the province of Chiriquí for the program Panamá en Directo.
While, Adolfo Fábrega, President of the Chamber of Commercehe said that in his organization they are “extremely concerned” about the current unemployment in Panama, so if the mine closes, “it is not a simple matter” that the associates go out and look for work and get it, “we are talking about people who today have an existence for his family”, in addition, he believed that if the project is closed, the impact on the environment will be greater.
“We are aware that we cannot oppose employment with an impact on the environment and we have said that responsible mining must be done, which can be done. The government must supervise well so that the mining that takes place in that place is responsible. We do not agree with new mines or new projects to changes to Mining Code, but there are already more than 40 thousand people who depend on that economy that has already been created. “We are fully in favor of this contract being approved and signed, because it is the best at the moment,” he said in the television program.
Last Wednesday, October 11, the President of the Republic, Laurentino Cortizo, reiterated that the contract with Mining of Panamawith its respective amendments approved by the Council of Cabinet, “is good for the country,” as it represents, among other benefits, the delivery of nearly B/0.800 million to the Panamanian state.
Cortizo explained that when this contract is approved and sanctioned, the Panamanian state ensures income from the company through two checks, one corresponding to the year 2022 for B/.395 million and the other for B/.375 million; that is, about B/.800 million.
He indicated that it is a contract that goes from B/.35 million which the mining company paid B/.375 million now that they will be awarded the works in the areas adjacent to the mine; for the IVM of the CSS, for the Institute for the Advancement and Care of Educators, as well as an increase for pensioners and retirees so that no one receives a pension below 350 B/350 per month.
