The Assembly requests an end to the discussion on the mining contract

President of the Committee for Trade and Economy, Roberto Ábregor, he pointed out this Thursday that the deputies have the power to suspend the debate on any bill, after the resolution was issued to stop the debate on the new contract with Minera Panamá.

Ábrego pointed out that although the consultation is not binding, they wanted to listen to the feelings and will of the community regarding the important points of the contract.

“That’s why today we approved this resolution indicating to the Executive that we as an assembly stop the discussion in the first debate, which is quite sustainable,” he said.

According to Ábrego, there was no change in the agenda because everything happened in the debate on the bill.

The president of the trade commission denied that there are divisions over the mining contract. He said they are asking the Executive to consider the proposals.

“We cannot force the Executive to withdraw the contract. If The Executive Board does not accept recommendations“It is our option to approve or disapprove that contract,” he added.

On the other hand, the Minister of Trade and Industry Federico Alfaro commented that they have to consider the resolution and make a decision.

Alfaro pointed out that the mining company is aware of the situation, but they did not give a formal communication because they did not receive anything formal from the assembly.

The minister defended the contract by pointing out that it benefits the state and gives more income than the previous one.

“Nothing is perfect, everything can be improved. If we can listen to those concerns and improve the contract, of course we will be in a position to do that,” he said.
