According to the fourth edition of the quarterly threat report, “Cyber Signals”, by Microsoft, between 2022 and 2023, cybercrime increased by 38% in the business environment. A worrying scenario, but one that is at least being taken care of.
“If two years ago, most companies conducted annual cyber security diagnoses; A few months ago it became semi-annual, and today that review is practically every two months,” says Ezequiel Carson, Chief Technology Officer and Vice President of Cloud Services at IFX Networks, a multinational company that Sophos, the world leader in digital security, recently selected as “Partner of the Year 2023”.
Carson, a computer engineer, comments that companies are increasingly aware of what it means to not have a cybersecurity strategy and are therefore looking to work with the best technology allies; in this case MSP (Managed Service Provider) or managed service provider, specialists who remotely service the information technology (IT) infrastructure.
“All companies, non-profit organizations and government agencies contract with MSPs for their day-to-day services: network and infrastructure management, security and monitoring. Good technology decisions can determine the growth of a project or business of any kind,” says the CEO of IFX Networks, the company that owns IFX Netglobalis in Chile.
But what should I consider in order to achieve a high level of cyber security in my company? Ezequiel Carson, gives advice.
1. Dismiss the fact that investing in cyber security is expensive: “The damage and economic damage that companies have when they suffer attacks is much higher than the potential security costs. We’re talking thousands of dollars to millions of dollars. The investment will not affect the overall budget of the company, but will help to implement the strategy with certain tactical plans”. According to Israel’s Computer Emergency Response Center (CERT), cyberattacks cost the global economy $6 billion a day.
2. Let’s assume that cyber security is not just a team: “It is a work concept that includes, among other things, processes, people, training, regulations. Continuous and professional monitoring and analysis is essential, always keeping in mind that the backbone is information protection.”
3.- Understand the importance of preventing technological obsolescence to mitigate incidents: “Most cyberattacks occur because of problems that could have been solved at the source with the right strategy. This implies precise configuration and a solid maintenance plan for its prevention. We are talking about outdated operating systems exposed to the Internet, a phenomenon that is unfortunately still common in several countries.
4.- Also raise awareness in the environment: “It is not enough that only the senior management of a company or institution becomes aware of cyber security; other people must also be taught about the message and behavior: internal work teams, suppliers, stakeholders, among others”.
