The Xunta replaces December 8, which will fall on a Sunday, as the Galician Letter Day

The Xunta announced this Monday in Galician official newspaper he Work calendar for 2024, which includes 12 of the 14 paid and non-compensated holidays that community workers will be able to enjoy next year, as the other two are local and chosen by municipalities. Within its area of activity, the Xunta chose May 17, Days of Galician Literatureand July 25, National Day of Galiciaas community holidays.

According to national regulations, of the 12 holidays not chosen by councils, nine are mandatory and cannot be changed unless they fall on a Sunday (in which case each community can choose to move them to the following Monday or a day of interest to the region). They are January 1, Good Friday (which is celebrated next year on March 29), May 1, August 15, October 12, November 1, and December 6, 8, and 25. In 2024, only one of those dates falls on Sunday, December 8, the day that celebrates the Immaculate Conception and ends the traditional December long weekend. The Xunta has proposed replacing that date with May 17, Día das Letras Galegas, which falls on a Friday next year, so that it will allow for a short bridge.

The other three holidays that communities can replace are January 6, Three Kings Day, which Galicia never touches. Nor does it ever do so with Maundy Thursday, which in 2024 coincides with March 28. And then each autonomy can choose between March 19 and July 25, although in Galicia the latter is always chosen because it is Galicia’s National Day.
