The title went to the actor in 2002, when his first romance with Jennifer Lopez was in full swing.

In 2003, Johnny Depp captivated the world as Captain Jack Sparrow in Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl – and was instantly recognized as the sexiest pirate, oh man, alive.

The actor received the title in 2004.

“He is the most beautiful man who ever walked the earth – an absolutely perfect oil painting,” Naomi Watts said of him at the time.

The actor received a commemorative cover in 2005 – just in time for the 20th anniversary of the Sexiest Man Alive award. After that, Matthew was just at the peak of popularity after starring in popular romantic comedies such as The Wedding Planner and How to Lose a Guy in 10 days.
