Withered Tomatoes: How the Performers of the 2000s Hit the Ketchup Song Now Look Now

The Ketchup Song (or Asereje in the Spanish version) was released in July 2002, at the height of the beach and open-air disco season. And it immediately became a summer number one hit.

The song was performed by the Muñoz sisters: Pilar, Lola and Lucia and Rocío. By the way, only the first three were filmed on video – Rocio went on maternity leave at that time.

The girls had music in their blood because their father, Jose Fernandez Torres, is a famous flamenco guitarist in Spain. Family continuity can also be seen in the name of the group – the singers’ father’s stage nickname “Tomato”.

They took the music industry by storm. As soon as the song was released, it immediately topped the charts in twenty-six countries and sold more than seven million copies!

In November of the same year, the girls released another single, Kusha Las Payas, but it did not become a hit.

As soon as they appeared on the world stage, they immediately disappeared! The sisters devoted themselves to family and children and returned to show business only in 2006, when they went to represent Spain at Eurovision with the song Un Blodymary. This time the fourth sister Rocío joined the group. The comeback was not very successful as the song only ended up at number 21 out of 24.

After this failure, the members of Las Ketchup threw themselves back into family life, but in 2016 they returned to the stage and performed their main hit during the semi-finals of Sweden’s Melodifestivalen, and a year later they played a concert in Mexico! In 2019, they again toured Spain and Bulgaria as a trio to the delight of their fans. They perform even today, but they still fail to please the audience with new hits, and their fans have been decreasing for a long time – they are subscribed to by over six thousand users on social networks.
