Svetlana Bragarnik was born into an officer’s family and moved around a lot. Before that, she spent her childhood in the Far East. The romance of the region also shaped her first dream – to become a geologist. Since the girl grew up rather closed, she did not even think about a stage career, besides, she had speech defects.

However, her passion for books and biographies of actors made her change her plans. Svetlana entered GITIS after reading a poem by Sergei Yesenin at the entrance exams, but her first year was a real nightmare for her – all because of the Baltic accent that Bragarnik acquired in Riga, where she spent her youth.

“When I entered GITIS, I read a passage without uttering a single letter of the Russian language, not only with a Baltic accent, but also with speech defects. It ended up that I was sent to a speech therapist to check if I had any pathological changes, “recalled the actress.

Fortunately, she eventually mastered the speech technique and continued her studies.

Bragarnik is better known to theater audiences. In the cinema, the actress acted a little and considered the stage her main profession. She spent her entire creative life on the theater stage. Gogol (later “Gogol Center”), whose ensemble she joined in 1972.

Bragarnik remained the main actress of the theater under different artistic directors, although her collaboration with Kirill Serebrennikov began with conflict. She resented the new artistic director and he said he would not stage a show especially for her.

But in the end, they managed to find a common language and the actress played in the director’s performances, including the sensational “(M) student”.

“You see, I’m monogamous,” she said of her relationship with the theater.

In 1992, Svetlana Bragarnik became the People’s Artist of the country.

Among her notable appearances on the silver screen are the roles in the film “Satan”, the series “Investigation led by ZnatoKi” and the film “The Apprentice”, which was born from the performance of Kirill Serebrennikov in the “Gogol Center”.

The actress has always been incredibly secretive and was confused by popular TV shows in which her colleagues openly talked about the most intimate things. Bragarnik was focused only on art and did not chase cheap sensations. The actress was married in her youth, but kept the name of her chosen one a secret. She had no children.
