'My last show as an actress': Christina Applegate announces her dreaded diagnosis

The Friends star made a rare appearance on the red carpet at the Fairmont Century Plaza in Century City, California. Christina chose a black velvet tuxedo style dress with satin lapels and train for the ceremony.

The actress was given a glamorous makeover with red lipstick, her hair styled into curly ringlets and left loose. Sadie looked like a carbon copy of the star mom. The girl in all black looked stylish and youthful. She accessorized the shirt, long jacket and trousers with a newsboy cap and chunky patent leather platform shoes by Dr. Martens with bright yellow laces.

Applegate carried around a wand that had several inscriptions on it, including her daughter’s name and a heart. The artist gave birth to her only child with musician Martin Lenoble, whom she married in 2013 after a five-year relationship. Sadie carefully supported the star mom’s hand and posed with her on the track.

The actress was nominated for her role as cynical widow Jen Harding in the Netflix comedy series Dead to Me. She lost in her category to Jean Smart, who won the award for her role as Deborah Vance in the hit HBO series Hacks. Despite the loss, Applegate raised her hands in joy when Smart was named the winner.

Christina announced that she is putting her acting career on hold due to health issues. In 2021, she was diagnosed with multiple sclerosis.“It’s probably my last award as an actress, so this show means a lot to me. Right now I can’t imagine getting up at 5am and being on set from 12pm to 2pm. It’s not possible for me at this point,” Applegate said.

Despite this, the Emmy winner found solace in voicing characters in movies and cartoons. “I do a lot of voicemails to make some money, to make sure my daughter eats and our house has everything we need,” the Daily Mail quotes the actress as saying.

Christina said she was “a wreck every day” as she filmed the show’s final season while battling symptoms of multiple sclerosis. “Most of this ordeal happened in my trailer alone,” the star said.

The production even had to take a five-month break to receive the necessary treatment. Filming resumed in January 2022 and was completed in February. She had to use a wheelchair and a cane, with her legs supporting her in the standing scenes.

“There were times when I broke down on set and said, ‘I can’t, we have to take a break, I need half an hour,’ so everyone was happy when everything ended well,” Christina said.

Applegate was diagnosed with breast cancer in 2008. She had to take drastic measures – she had both mammary glands removed, later implants were inserted. In 2017, she had her ovaries and fallopian tubes removed because she was found to have the BRCA1 gene, which could cause ovarian cancer. Christina received a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame last November.
