42-year-old Canadian Ryan Gosling is the star of Drive, The Ides of March, Blade Runner and many others. He even recently played Ken, a friend of Barbie dolls – and it seems that better casting for the role could not be imagined!
Gosling’s heroes are cool, fit guys with great looks. However, there was one role in his career that was very different from this one, and Ryan really wanted to play it, but something went wrong…
It is about Peter Jackson’s film “The Lovely Bones”, which was released in 2009. It is a film adaptation of Alice Sebold’s rather creepy bestseller: the story is told from the point of view of a girl Susie Salmon (one of Saoirse Ronan’s first roles) who became victims of a maniac, and from the underworld. how her death changed the lives of those close to her.
Ryan Gosling was cast as Susie’s father, Jack Salmon. After the 26-year-old Gosling got acquainted with the original source and the script, he went to work with great enthusiasm. He decided that the grieving parent needed to look more mature—and overweight. Therefore, he began to diligently gain weight.

Ryan later said in an interview that he was on a diet of sorts – the basis of his diet was…melt ice cream. The actor literally washed down other high-calorie delicacies with them.
Of course, the effect did not take long – Gosling recovered almost 28 kilos in a short time. In addition, he grew a beard, and when he decided that it now perfectly suited his character type, he went to meet the director.

However, both Peter Jackson and the film’s producers were horrified by the eye-opening changes. Despite the fact that the appearance of a fat Gosling happened to people just before the start of filming, the management of the film made a difficult decision – Ryan was fired.
Let’s recall that Jackson already pulled such a trick: on the first day of filming, he fired the actor from the role of Aragorn in the first film of the Lord of the Rings trilogy. A similar situation occurred with The Lovely Bones: the role of Jack Salmon was given to Mark Wahlberg in an emergency. He did well, but, unfortunately, he was not rewarded – all the laurels, including the Oscar for the best actor in a supporting role, went to Stanley Tucci, who played the role of a cruel maniac.
And Ryan Gosling lost weight and no longer signed up for such experiments – the actor admitted that he did not like being “fat and unemployed”.
