Belzer was born in Bridgeport, Connecticut. In 1972, Belzer was a featured player on the National Lampoon Radio Hour alongside John Belushi, Chevy Chase, Bill Murray and Gilda Radner.

The actor started out as a comedian, but became famous for his role as detective John Munch, first in the TV series Murder and then in the Special Victims Unit. Belzer was last seen in the famous project in 2016. He also appeared in the original Law & Order and Trial by Jury movies. In total, Belzer played Munch on 11 different shows over 22 years, including The X-Files, Arrested Development, The Wire and The Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt.
He was married three times during his life and survived testicular cancer. The actor’s mother died in 1964, his brother Leonard committed suicide in 2014. He is survived by his wife Harley McBride, whom he married in 1985, and stepdaughters Jessica and Bree, the Daily Mail reports.
