The 46-year-old skater developed sepsis due to the coronavirus infection. Initially, necrosis appeared on the lower extremities. In this regard, doctors amputated Kostomarov’s legs last week. Doctors tried to save the athlete’s hands. However, even the brushes began to turn black, Roman was getting worse and worse.

“Kostomarov underwent a second operation. Both hands were amputated,” said a source in KP medical circles.

Journalists have not yet received official confirmation of this news. The figure skater’s wife, Oksana Domnina, refuses to comment. She only noted that her husband, when he recovered, would tell about his health himself if he wanted to.

The former partner of Taťána Navka has been in the intensive care unit of the hospital in Kommunarka since January 10. Lev Averbakh, a doctor at the “Koris” private ambulance in St. Petersburg, indicated that if Kostomarov’s limbs were not amputated, he would die. According to the doctor, gangrene can develop independently of any limb, sepsis is transient and can quickly spread throughout the body.

“It may happen that, for example, amputation of the hand is necessary on two fingers, on the other – on three. And on the legs in parallel as well. If the limbs are not amputated, he will die,” warned the expert in a comment for Ren-TV.

Last week, Kostomarov agreed to have his fingers amputated. Dmitry Dibrov called the skater “a hero of our time.” The TV presenter pointed out the similarity of the fate of Roman Kostomarov and the legendary fighter pilot Alexei Maresyev.
