Ice and fire: the love story of Alexander Ovechkin and Anastasia Shubska

Anastasia Shubskaya and Alexander Ovechkin have been together since 2015, but have known each other for much longer. They met when Nastya was only 14 years old. The girl’s father, businessman Kirill Shubsky, was a member of the Olympic Committee and took his daughter with him to the Beijing Olympics in 2008. There, at one of the parties, Shubskaya met superstar Sasha Ovechkin.

At that time, of course, there could be no question of any feelings: for the hockey player, Nastya was still a child. Nevertheless, even then they formed an opinion about each other: Shubskaya knew Ovechkin as an aggressive and expressive player, and during a personal meeting she noted his calmness and good will and “unstellar” simplicity. Then during one of these evenings in Beijing, their first delay happened – it’s funny because they both didn’t even know they were going to be husband and wife at the time.

From China, Ovechkin returned to the United States, where he lived in recent years. Legends flew to Russia from abroad about what kind of heart Alexander was. The hockey player did not deny the rumors, but emphasized that he would only marry a Russian. The first attempt to build a family with a compatriot happened in 2012: Ovechkin announced his engagement to tennis player Maria Kirilenko. However, two years later, the lovers broke up, and Masha became the initiator of the separation.

“I have decided to call off the engagement. There are many reasons, but I would not like to go into details. I will say one thing: our relationship is over, but I respect Sasha as a person and an athlete and I sincerely wish him further sporting success, “said the tennis player in an interview with R-Sport.

Ovechkin himself did not mourn for long and had an affair with the 19-year-old Olympic champion in rhythmic gymnastics, Karolina Sevastjanova. But this relationship did not end in anything serious. It is not known how much Alexander would have wandered through life in search of the right one, if it were not for a random photo on social networks …

In November 2014, the hockey player was surfing social networks, where he came across a girl with an exemplary appearance. When Alexander found Nasty’s account, he realized that they had already met her and wanted to continue communicating. Without thinking, the athlete directly wrote to Shubská and asked for her phone number.

It’s funny, but Nastya received the message exactly one minute after her birthday came, on November 16 at 00:01. It seemed like a good sign and the girl sent her number. Thus began their communication over a distance of thousands of kilometers.

However, she did not have to wait long for a personal meeting: Nastya was finishing her studies at VGIK and was going to Los Angeles for advanced training, where she planned to meet her writer. The long-awaited first date happened in February 2015, when the Ovechkin team played in the City of Angels.

The first meeting went well, although Shubskaya was worried that after three months of active correspondence they would have nothing to talk about. On the contrary, it turned out that they never run out of topics to talk about.

After this meeting in Los Angeles, Shubskaya and Ovechkin began dating. The novel developed quickly, and soon the lovers introduced each other to their parents. Nastya’s mother, Vera Glagoleva, flew with her daughter to Washington, where she attended Ovechkin’s match, and then met him. The future mother-in-law and son-in-law easily found a common language. Shubskaya, when she met her friend’s parents, realized that you can be yourself next to them.

Only six months after the beginning of the relationship, Ovechkin decided to marry his beloved. He flew to Russia, where he knelt on the doorstep of Nastia’s house and pulled out a small box with a ring from his pocket. Shubskaya did not expect such a serious step from the hockey player, and yet she agreed without hesitation.

They got married almost a year later, on August 28, 2016, and 10 months later they played a spectacular wedding, choosing the beautiful date of July 8 – the Day of Family, Love and Fidelity.

Only a month after the grand celebration of the couple, the first test awaited – Nastya’s mother Vera Glagoleva died after a long battle with oncology. It was a terrible blow for the girl (as well as her sisters), but fortunately a loving husband was nearby to help her through this ordeal.

Even on the eve of the wedding, Shubskaya admitted that she belongs to the category of people for whom family is the most important thing, so she will follow her husband wherever he says. And she kept her word: Shortly after the wedding, Nastya moved to her husband in the USA, where they still live today.

In 2018, the couple became parents for the first time: on August 18, a boy was born, whom the happy parents named Sergei – in honor of the deceased older brother of the hockey player. It was he who brought little Sasha to hockey many years ago, although his parents were strongly against this idea.

On May 27, 2020, Nastya gave birth to a second son, whom she and Alexander named after the old Russian name Ilya.

From the outside, it seems that the Ovechkin family is idyllic. This is partly true, but Nastya notes that conflicts in their house happen and are resolved only thanks to the wisdom of her husband: “I have a more complex nature, I am a Scorpio in the year of the Rooster. And Saša is calmer when we argue, he keeps silent and then tells me: “I’m waiting for you to calm down, we’ll discuss everything later.” We’re only in a relationship because I’m fire and he’s ice.
