‘I did my best to fit in’: Meghan Markle completely changed her wardrobe for the Queen

Prince Harry’s wife has said she had to “soften up” her wardrobe while in the UK to avoid clashing with senior members of the royal family. The former American actress’ confession came out in the third episode of the £88 million Netflix documentary series Harry & Meghan.

According to the Duchess of Sussex, she did not have courses like in the movie “The Princess Diaries” that would prepare her to work in the ranks of the monarchy. She even had to google the British national anthem before marrying Prince Harry. “Learning to bow to the Queen when she was in the public eye was a baptism of fire for life at the company,” Meghan Markle said.

The Los Angeles native changed her wardrobe to fit in with the palatial life. “For most of the time I was in the UK, I rarely wore colorful things. I understand that you can never wear the same color as Her Majesty. If it’s a group event, then you shouldn’t be the same color as one of the other senior family members either.”

Prince Harry’s wife tried to respect the traditions and follow the unspoken protocol. So she began to dress almost exclusively in shades of black, camel, beige and white.

“I wore a lot of muted tones. It was also so I could just blend in. I wasn’t trying to stand out here. There was no version of me to join this family. I did my best to fit in. I didn’t want to embarrass the family,” Meghan said.

The former royal allowed herself to wear bright clothes only during solo appearances. For example, she wore a bright red coat over a purple dress during a visit to a community center in Birkenhead, reports the Daily Mail.

Meghan compared the first meeting with Elizabeth II in 2016 to a themed dinner in medieval America. The Queen was the first high-ranking member of the royal family Meghan met after announcing her relationship with Prince Harry in 2016. The meeting took place during a dinner at the Royal Lodge in Windsor. According to Meghan, it was a tense moment. She learned to bow to Her Majesty just before entering the residence. Prince Harry recalled this special event with a smile.

“How do you explain bowing to your grandmother? And that you must bow. How do you explain this to people, especially Americans? That’s strange,” laughed the heir to the British throne.
