“Pugacheva invited me to Kiev”: Kai Metov talked about communication with the pop star

The artist broke into the charts in the early 90s with the song “Position No. 2”. It was followed by “Remember Me”, which also became a hit. Kai became the laureate of “Song of the Year”. He met Pugačeva at the final concert of this festival.

“My first meeting with Alla Borisovna was curious,” said Metov in an exclusive interview with VOICE. – It happened in the Kremlin Palace. At that time, everyone didn’t know me yet, but my songs were already known. I was given a modest dressing room which was far from the stage, close to the toilet. I entered it and waited for my departure. Since I didn’t know the co-stars yet, I felt a little uneasy. I had to sit for a long time. And I went out into the corridor. It was empty. Suddenly I see – at the very end of the corridor, Alla Borisovna appeared from the side of the stage. To be honest, I was confused. And he went back to the dressing room.

The poet, composer and performer became friends with many show business stars. Concert organizers offer him decent conditions for preparing for performances. The second meeting between Metov and Pugacheva took place in a noisy company. They spoke at Masha Rasputin’s birthday party.

“Pugacheva also came on vacation,” Kai recalled. – Then she married Kirkorov. He was just singing my song “Tea Rose” with Masha. Philip said: “Hello, meet Kai Metov who wrote this hit.” And Pugacheva says: “And I know him. I remember very well walking down the corridor of the Kremlin Palace and seeing this artist. And he saw me – he probably got scared and ran away. I answered: “Yes, Allo Borisovna, everything was exactly like that, I admit. It was a very emotional meeting, so it happened.’

Metov crossed paths with the People’s Artist of the USSR at various concerts. One of their photos together was taken at an ice performance. The singer sat in the same box with Pugačeva. The pop star was interested in talking to him. On her initiative, Kai traveled to a neighboring country.

“In 2009, Alla Borisovna invited me to Kiev for the filming of Christmas meetings,” said the Honored Artist of Russia. That concert took place in the Sports Palace. Anastasia Volochkova, Philip Kirkorov, Kristina Orbakaite, Nikolai Baskov, Sofia Rotaru, Maxim Galkin and other artists took part in it. In early January 2010, this concert was broadcast by Russian and Ukrainian TV channels.

Every year in April, the musician congratulated Pugachev on his birthday on his blog. However, this did not happen in 2022. The singer explained why he refused to publicly speak out against Christina Orbakaite’s mother.

“This year, with the ongoing special operation, other dramatic events and social media trials, I have a reserved attitude,” Kai assured. I don’t write there on holidays. I generally post occasionally and to the point.

My happy childhood and youth are connected with her songs to the verses of Ilya Reznik and the music of Raimonds Pauls. They helped me grow as an artist. I think millions of people are close to her work. Is Alla Borisovna making the statements many in Israel have been talking about right now? It will be judged by time. But the artist can go where she wants. She did not tell me why she was leaving Russia and why she was coming back. Yes, I generally did not communicate with her after Pugacheva left for Israel.

Kai noted that Russian society now pays very close attention to those cultural figures who are leaving the country. Recently, the poet Andrei Lukyanov went to Israel, with whom they wrote songs for the series. Two weeks later, the composer’s friend returned. In an interview with Metov, he expressed surprise that the press did not report on his departure or return. The performer of the hit “It Rains Somewhere Far Away” was not thinking about emigration.

“I have grown so attached to Russia that I don’t think I will ever leave it, no matter what happens,” assured the native of Karaganda. — I live in an apartment in Moscow. I also have a house in the suburbs. I see no need to leave the country.”
