The 911 call came in on Sunday. Witnesses reported the possible death of the personal chef of the former president of the United States. After that, the area around the “Martha’s Vineyard” estate turned into a place of investigation. The search began in the Big Pond area of Edgartown, Massachusetts, where Tafari was rowing.
Campbell is the Obama family’s longtime sous chef. He was last seen trying to float on the surface of the water. He was dressed all in black and was without a life jacket. When dispatchers sent crews to the scene, they said, “Edgartown Fire and Rescue, Turkiland Cove Road. Drowning is possible for a man.”

Edgartown Fire Chief Alex Schaeffer said island police and firefighters searched the home. They also searched the shore of the pond on foot. The chef’s personal belongings, including a hat, were found there. Campbell’s body was found deep in a pond on Monday.
“At approximately 10:00 a.m., the body of the missing man was removed from a large pond in Edgartown by Massachusetts State Police divers. It was discovered using side scan sonar from the ship. The rescue operation involved the U.S. Coast Guard, Edgartown Fire Department, detectives and the Dukes County Sheriff’s Department,” state police said in a statement.

A command post was set up on Wilson’s Landing, across a narrow bay from Obama’s residence. The Edgartown Police Department confirmed that Wilson’s Landing has reopened to the public. According to the Daily Mail, the investigation into the man’s death is being conducted by State Police in cooperation with the Cape End Islands District Attorney’s Office and Edgartown Police.
Michelle and Barack Obama expressed their condolences to the chef’s family. “Tafari was a beloved part of our family. When we first met him, he was a talented chef at the White House—creative and passionate about food and its ability to bring people together. In the following years, we got to know him as a warm, funny, extremely kind person who brightened up our lives a little. Therefore, when we were about to leave the White House, we asked Tafari to stay with us, and he generously agreed. He’s been a part of our lives ever since and our hearts are broken because he’s gone,” the ex-president and his wife said.
