Epic Mistake: Why Bill Murray Wished He Voiced Garfield Stars

Epic mistake: why Bill Murray regretted voicing Garfield

We, the audience, adore Garfield, but Bill Murray just flinches at the memory of the character he gave his voice to. This work reminds him of an epic mistake caused by his carelessness.

Here is how it was. Upon receiving the script, Murray immediately agreed to voice the redheaded cat. He had no doubts about the project because Joel Coen’s name was on the cover. The actor thought we were talking about one of the Coen brothers – the same iconic directors who made The Big Lebowski, Fargo and Barton Fink. But this was a different Joel Coen, a much less famous and successful screenwriter. In English spelling, their names differed by only one letter: Joel Coen and Joel Cohen.

Murray quickly signed the contract and was already looking forward to working with the champions. What a disappointment awaited him when he came to the studio. But there was nowhere to go.

“There was a long two-minute silence. Then I might have cursed a little,” he recalled.

Murray, of course, did his job, but from then on he began to carefully read scripts and the names of writers and directors.

Critics crushed Garfield, but it was relatively successful at the box office – with a budget of 50 million dollars, the picture earned more than 200 million.
