The Chinese Nio introduces two new brands specifically for Europe

The Chinese manufacturer Nio – which has recently also been active in the Netherlands – will shortly be launching two completely new brands especially for the European market. One can use Nio’s battery swapping stations, the other cannot.

Nio scores with the ET7, a large electric sedan, and its SUV variant EL7. Incidentally, the latter model is called ES7 in China, but Audi is currently conducting a legal battle in Europe to have the use of the ES+ number combination banned.

Twelve Nio battery swap stations in Europe

The special feature is the network of battery exchange stations in China and Europe. There are already 1352 worldwide, with twelve in Europe and four in the Netherlands at the time of writing. In May we will have two more.

Using a battery swap station isn’t necessary – a Nio can also charge and fast charge easily – but it’s a convenient option for people who want to get out quickly or have to travel long distances. The battery change is done in 4 to 5 minutes.

Two new brands: Codename Alps and Firefly

Of the two new brands that Nio plans to introduce to the European market, one will be able to use the battery changers and one will not. Names are yet to be revealed, but the brands will be developed under the codenames Alps and Firefly.

Details about Alps are not yet known. We know that Firefly will be a compact electric car brand. Why can’t they change their battery? Probably because the wheelbase is too short for the standard battery packs.

“The Alps are for Nio what Volkswagen is for Audi”

CEO and founder William Li didn’t want to give Autovisie a specific timeline just yet, but did say one of the European brands will be launched later this year.

“The Alps are to Nio what Volkswagen is to Audi,” Li lifted a corner of the veil. Firefly will be below, with mostly smaller models.
