As a car enthusiast you know ABT from the tuned Audis, but the company is also involved in completely different developments. For example, a solar car from the Volkswagen ID. Buzz. Unlike Lightyear, will ABT be able to make an “affordable” solar car that can charge itself for free?
It is not the first custom-made product from ABT this year. Previously, the company showed a tuned version of the Volkswagen T6.1 camper. Now another Volkswagen is being converted.
Top up Volkswagen ID.Buzz for free
ABT has made it much easier for itself than Lightyear. The technicians from ABT e-Line placed solar panels on the roof of the ID.Buzz. Although a solar car sounds awesome, it’s relatively easy to mount the panels on a flat surface like the roof of a van.

The panels of the Volkswagen ID.Buzz deliver 600 W of power when the sun is fully up. Ideally, you could drive 3000 kilometers a year “for free” through the panels. On a sunny day, the range of 410 kilometers according to the WLTP measurement method is slightly larger. Significant deviations will not come about.

If you want to drive even more kilometers for free with self-generated energy, you can also opt for side panels. The experts from Kempten in Germany (near the Austrian border) are working on a setup that can deliver more than 1,000 W.
Abt solar car cheaper than Lightyear, but not exactly cheap
It is not yet possible to turn your Volkswagen ID.buzz into a solar car. The solar modules for your electric vehicle can be ordered in 2024. ABT has not yet announced how expensive the set is. The ID.Buzz is also not free and costs at least 67,490 including taxes.
Test Volkswagen ID.Buzz
The Volkswagen ID.Buzz is perhaps one of the most eye-catching new cars of the past year. In the video below, Jaco Bijlsma guides you into the EV. Can the car live up to all of his expectations or will it disappoint?
