Charging your electric car wirelessly is faster than you think

Park, pull out the plug from the tailgate, scan the charging card, and then plug in the plug on both sides. Charging your electric car only takes a few minutes. At least if you don’t charge your electric vehicle wirelessly. While this still sounds pie in the sky, it may happen sooner than you think.

Tuner Abt partners with WiTricity to land electric vehicles wirelessly. It doesn’t seem that complicated, after all, your phone can also charge wirelessly.

A wireless charger next year

Abt and WiTricity are working on wireless chargers for electric cars. Next year you should be able to switch an electric vehicle to wireless charging. The first electric car that can be charged wirelessly is the Volkswagen ID.4.

This is how electric charging works for your electric car

There is on the wall box added a slab lying on the ground. The ID.4 charges wirelessly via a coil that is installed in the floor of the car and is connected to the car’s charging system. The distance between the two coils should be 10 to 25 centimeters.

WiTricity had a working electric car with a wireless charger in circulation as early as 2022. Volvo was also busy with it.

Notably, Abt and WiTricity state that wireless charging is about as efficient as a plug-in charger. Charging smartphones with a cable is even faster. However, Abt and WiTricity claim that you can charge up to 100 kilometers per hour. At home, you can charge the VW ID.4 with a cable at a maximum of 79 kilometers per hour, with a wireless charger it shouldn’t go any faster.

It remains to be seen how fast such a wireless charger will ultimately be. The price of a wireless charger for your electric car is also still unclear.
