Citroën wants to sell many electric cars with this tactic

The selection on the market for electric cars is now quite large, but they are – apart from a few examples – not really affordable. Citroën will change that soon.

Behind the scenes, the French are working flat out on a range of new electric cars. These cars will get “super cool” styling and, more importantly, “very aggressive” pricing. That’s what design chief Pierre Leclercq says Coach.

Price of new Citroen

What does “very aggressive” mean? Well that the cars will be a bit cheaper than the models that are now available in the market. Think of the MG 4, the Fiat 500e and the Opel Corsa-e. In the Netherlands these cost 31 and 37 thousand euros respectively. So count on new electric Citroëns that cost less than 30,000 euros.

“I think that will be a big, very big advantage for a brand like Citroën. Premium brands are becoming more premium and there are a lot of people who don’t have the money to buy such a car,” says Leclercq.

According to the Frenchman, the new models will have styling cues from the Citroën Ami and the cool Oli, the concept model we saw late last year. A car with which Citroën showed that you can build a very acceptable electric vehicle with fewer batteries and less weight.

It is still unclear exactly what these models are, but we are certain that the new C3 Aircross is one. So a car from the B segment. “In terms of design, the cars are really cool. We are very excited to be putting these cars on the road. The prices will be very aggressive. We can only be proud that we made it.” That’s promising!

No infotainment

By the way, Autocar has interesting things to report about the interior of the new cars. In order to save production costs, the models may do without an infotainment screen. Instead, it is possible in the models to use your own smartphone as infotainment. “You live in your phone all day. The closer we (the manufacturer, ed.) get to what you have on your phone, the better it is.” The little Citroën Ami also has a smartphone holder instead of a touchscreen in the dashboard, but Citroën is thinking about one better solution for passenger cars.

The new models will also use Stellantis’ already familiar CMP platform, which also includes cars like the Peugeot 208 and Opel Corsa. That should also keep the price of the new Citroën models low.
